This is a thick client, Windows based software, so it requires regular upgrades to keep up with the latest Windows release.
We have been able to integrate most of our business processes into this software. The version we are currently using is mature, but it only is supported on Windows XP and 7. The newest version supports Windows 10, but from past experience I know it will have unresolved bugs. The new features it does have (which are a subset of those promised for the last two years) will be useful to us, but they will be 95% complete and require additional support from the software company's development team.
The front line tech support team is great; they usually have a solution within a day. When they don't it gets sent to development, and that is usually a 3 month black hole of zero feedback until a patch is released.
The annual support agreement and associated fee feels like paying a ransom for our data. Our controller has been fighting an uphill battle to convince our CEO to retain it. At the same time, the carrot we've been chasing looks less appetizing every year.
